Description: Postage dues taxed Palestine mail to USA: 6 June 1939 postmarked small cover on imprinted British Army postal stationary of The Buffs, sent from TEL AVIV to BEVERLY Massachusetts USA, franked 10 mils & tied by single strike of the head post office postmark. The letter was shortpaid by 5 mils for the period 15 mils rate for air service to the UK and surface transport from there to the US (10m was the rate for air or surface mail to the UK itself), but the deficiency was not noticed in Palestine - hence no taxe mark. The under payment was noticed in NEW YORK where the cover was tied by an American taxe mark of 4 cents (4 gold centimes, as twice the deficient postage), and when the postal service revised the address to SAN FRANCISCO, on the opposite side of the country, the cover's tax was converted to US currency as 20 cents - and this was paid in California, when the letter was delivered, using 2x local precancel 10c postage dues stamps (one now missing).
