He was only one of two people to be Secretary of State under three different Presidents. He also won the 1884 republication nomination for President of the United States (and was defeated in the general election by Grover Cleveland). He began is political career as an early supporter of Abraham Lincoln and the Union war effort in the American Civil War. The book for its age is in good condition.
