Description: Sacred Audio Prayers and Meditations for Educated Catholic Christians (Czech: posvatni zvukove modlitby a uvazovani pro vzdelane katolicke kresfany) by Joseph Stanislaus Albach ***VERY RARE - see NOTHING like it for sale on eBay or from antiquarian booksellers. A STUNNING CATHOLIC MISSAL IN EXCEPTIONAL FINE BINDING! Published in 1874 in Vimberk, Czechoslovakia, this is an antique Catholic missal and breviary written in Czech. Octavo, 384 pages, approximately 6” x 4”. Condition: VERY GOOD Bound in exceptionally well-preserved fine, full-leather binding with an inlaid, beautifully aged genuine ivory cross on the front cover, exquisite hand-tooled embossed and hand-carved leather boards with edges encased in protective brass fittings attached to an ornate brass clasp. The front board carved relief is outlined in gilt, with gilt covered angels and single filet gilt paneling. The back cover leather is also hand-carved and embossed in mirror image to the front cover. The spine has gilt lettering and three embossed inlaid reddish-brown leather Christian motifs. All edges gilt. Steel-engraved plates, full-color title page, illustrated head and tail pieces. STUNNING! Condition: VERY GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION, PARTICULARLY FOR A 150-YEAR-OLD CATHOLIC MISSAL Square spine with firm joints. Hinges are cracking but holding firm. Last few leaves barely attached. The leather is exceptionally well-preserved with some light rubbing, mostly along the joints. Edges and corners protected by the brass encasements. Remarkably, most of the original front cover gilding is intact (quite scarce! - usually this had long rubbed away). The natural ivory cross has aged a natural off-white/light yellow, as one would expect. Soiling built up along the edge of the cross, which can be cleaned, if desired. Almost all of the page edge gilding is also present, which is also quite scarce to find. The interior shows foxing throughout the prayer and song book: the missal has been well-used as there are quite a few smudges/spots of soiling. No bookplates or stamps, some pencil writing on rear endpapers. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Joseph Stanislaus Albach (1795 - 1853) was born in Slovakia. After his studies, the Franciscan order accepted him; After his ordination, he preached in German on Sundays at the Franciscan Church in Pest, Hungary. He was described as an “excellent pulpit orator” and was soon dubbed the “Austrian Lacordaire.” Through the rhetoric he used in his sermons, “he carried away the listeners […] and gripped them to the deepest extent.” He made a name for himself not only as a preacher, but also as a devotional author. However, he had to withdraw from his work as a preacher due to a chronic illness. He then moved to Eisenstadt to devote himself to his secondary interests - botany and science.
