1870’s 27 HOLY LAND STEREOVIEWS by S. R. FISHER OF NORRISTOWN PA 7” X 4.5”

Description: A collection of twenty seven different stereoviews by Samuel Ritter Fisher (1834-1908) of Norristown, Pa. These views date to the 1870's &, most likely, specifically date to circa 1874-1878 or so. To find any of the stereoview photos taken by Samuel Ritter Fisher is a significant challenge as his work rarely comes up for sale. The extensive former Robert Dennis stereoview collection currently owned by the New York Public Library only has one single example of Samuel Fisher's work which is from a different series than the ones which we offer in this listing. The Getty Museum in California has two stereoviews from a different series by Fisher in their collection. We have done extensive research & have not been able to find any record of even a single view from this series which we are offering that has changed hands or is in any public collection. So, this offering of this group of 27 presents a significant opportunity for the advanced collector. Samuel Fisher took photos of various locations in Pennsylvania as well as the photos in this series during his travels to the Holy Land. The group we are offering in this listing is, by far, the largest group of his work which we have ever seen offered for sale. The locations all have the original inked notations on the backs written by the photographer. The views we are offering are of various locations in the Holy Land. These views are all on the large and visually impressive cabinet sized mounts measuring 7 inches by 4 1/2 inches. These views are all on vibrant orange front mounts with purple backs. There is absolutely no fading to the orange or the purple. This group was, once in its life, mounted in an album. So, all of the cards show signs on the backs of their former album mountings. These back flaws include signs of a thin line where they were attached to an album page as well as some varying degree of surface paper loss & or some faint staining lines. Two of the cards show major paper loss on the backs. All of the fronts have some bits or strips of extra paper attached in some areas. Some fronts have only a tiny bit of extra paper whereas some fronts have significant extra paper. One tiny corner tip on the front of one card has a surface paper scuff resulting in a tiny loss of paper. In all cases, except that one case on the fronts, all of the front flaws are due to the presence of extra paper & there is absolutely no loss of the actual surface of the card on the fronts. So, all of the extra paper flaws on the fronts could be corrected by the removal of that extra paper. This extra surface paper, which is on the fronts of the cards, can be safely removed if very carefully and very slowly and patiently done. We tested a few spots on a couple of fronts with a tiny bit of moisture. We were entirely successful in removing some of the tiny bits of residue paper with absolutely zero damage to the surface underneath. Based on how long it took us to remove a few small bits of the extra paper we would estimate that ten hours or more of careful work should be allowed if you have desire to remove or have professionally removed the rest of the extra paper which is present. We have decided to offer the cards exactly as they currently are shown & not to remove any more of the extra paper. So, you are purchasing the cards exactly as they currently are shown with some extra paper on the fronts of the cards present. Please note that we are not able to read all of the titles completely and we may have read a few letters incorrectly. So, please take this in to account when reading the titles below. We have numbered the titles below for your convenience. But, these numbers are NOT on the actual views. The only view we notice a number on is one of the Cairo, Egypt images which has a number 59.
